Implantology

Implants are small cylindrical screw-like artificial roots made of titanium or zirconium, which are put in the jaw bone in place of lost teeth.

Titanium and zirconium are tissue-friendly materials, and it is expected that there will be a microscopic healthy integration between the bone it is placed on and the load-bearing implant.

In Which Conditions Implant is Made?

  1. Single tooth loss
  2. Multiple tooth loss
  3. Complete loss of teeth (Edentulous jaws)

Why is the Implant Advantageous?

  1. A fixed crown or bridge can be made without harming your existing teeth.
  2. If you a have a multiple teeth missing, you can have a fixed prosthesis instead of a removable dentures.
  3. If you have no teeth and use complete dentures, your existing prosthesis can be supported with implants, you can use your prosthesis more comfortably and safely without worrying whether it will fall or not.
  4. If you do not have any teeth, you can have a fixed prosthesis with implant treatment depending on your current bone structure and health condition, providing that your dentist confirms that it is suitable.
  5. After tooth extraction, the width and height of the bone surrounding the teeth are reduced. If the implant is placed after tooth extraction, the volume of the bone in these areas is largely preserved.
  6. With the timely application of implants, bone loss supporting the cheek and the lips is reduced and facial aesthetics is preserved.

Can Anyone Have Implants?

The growth and development of the jaw continues till 18 – 20 in most of the cases, therefore it is recommended to start the treatment in the people with missing teeth at earliest 18 – 20 years of age .  In some cases, this can be as low as 16 years. Since every individual is different, it is best left upto the dentist to determine feasibility of placing implants. Growth assessment can be done by various tests that would indicate active growth/ completion of growth .

Alcohol or drug addicts, people who smokes excessively, and patients who receive high doses of radiotherapy in the head and neck region are not suitable candidates for implant treatment.

Implant treatment can only be applied to people with some chronic or systemic diseases (uncontrolled diabetes, connective tissue diseases, hemophilia, immune system failure, etc.) via the written consent of their medical doctors.

For people with insufficient bone height or width in the area where the implant will be placed, the bone may need to be reconstructed with some special procedures to carry out the implant therapy.

Implant treatment is not recommended for patients who do not and will not maintain oral hygiene.

How long does it take to complete an implant operation and treatment?

The operation time can last from 30 minutes to 2-3 hours depending on the number of implants to be placed. In order to make a permanent prosthesis, it is recommended to wait for a recovery period of approximately 1.5-2 months in the lower jaw, and 2-3 months in the upper jaw. This period may be extended in cases where advanced surgery such as graft membrane, sinus lifting and similar surgeries are performed. Temporary prosthesis can be fabricated for the patients until permanent prosthesis are made.

How many implants are needed to make a fixed prosthesis in completely toothless jaws?

4-8 implants per jaw will be sufficient for a fixed prosthesis, depending on the case.

Is Fixed Prosthesis Always Made On The Implant?

2-4 implants can be applied to each jaw to increase the retention and function of the existing removable prosthesis in completely edentulous patients.

What is Periimplantitis?

It is an infection that occurs in the tissues around the implants. The infection causes the resorption of the bone around the implant. In advanced and untreated conditions, this infection can lead to implant loss. Treatment is possible in the early period.
